A study of the financial impact of imprisonment on prisoners’ families. Through in-depth qualitative interviews with the families and partners of prisoners and an evaluation of services for these families, the study looks at: loss of work, income reduction and reliance on welfare benefits; mental and physical health problems; the limitations of statutory and voluntary services. The authors conclude that a review of criminal justice policy for families is needed, focusing on four key themes: rights and equality; care principles; public accounts reform; and community-based services.
