Families Outside is the only national charity in Scotland that works solely to support the families of people involved in the criminal justice system. We work to mitigate the effects of imprisonment on children and families – and consequently to reduce the likelihood of reoffending – through support and information for families and for the people who work with them.

This research examines the influence of family during childhood in forming future drinking habits and explores how different economic circumstances, parenting styles and parents’ drinking behaviours influence how children view and understand alcohol. The report provides a children’s perspective on exposure to family drinking and identifies implications for policy and practice, including the need for providing parental guidance and ways to do so.

This paper examines the links between homelessness and offending and provides a review of research on the impact of supported accommodation. It also identifies critical issues that arise from the research and which may hinder the ability of the ex-offender to ‘move on, including: financial insecurity, family breakdown, multiple deprivation, overdependence, the negative effects of hostel accommodation.

A report on user views of punishment. The researchers carried out interviews with prisoners serving prison sentences of six months or less and with people serving community sentences. Key findings include: it is the cumulative effect of doing many short sentences, more than the experience of any single sentence, which carries the largely negative impacts of short-term imprisonment; prison time is often passive time; the impact of community sentences was rated positively compared to that of prison.

Examines the causes and extent of debt amongst homeless young people, one of the most vulnerable groups in society. Reflects the views and experiences of 100 young people consulted for this research.

The first drug strategy by the Coalition Government, it purports to offer 'a fundamentally different approach to preventing drug use' and 'has recovery at its heart'. It promises to provide 'a more holistic approach, by addressing other issues in addition to treatment to support people dependent on drugs or alcohol, such as offending, employment and housing'. It also 'puts more responsibility on individuals to seek help and overcome dependency' whilst giving communities more 'power and accountability'. It aims to 'reduce demand' and 'crack down' on supply.

This project supports young children and babies in prison with their mothers and has been developed from BLP’s Christmas gift project to give individual children a book at Easter. BLP notice that children respond positively to books and seek to encourage this positive reaction.

Provides residential and non-residential suport for women caught up in the criminal justice system. Offers support - residential or daily - for detoxification, support and outreach to health, social work and housing services. Up to 14 women can be accomodated in the residential unit.
